CES 09 Day 1 Impressions (CES 09) By Richard S. Stites Editor-in-Chief Published: 01/08/09 PrintEmail
Las Vegas, Nevada - Today was the onset of CES 2009. CES is one of my favorite shows of the year; CES has games, cars, computers, robots and all the emerging technologies that you could want.
Unfortunately this year's CES just hasn't lived up to the high bar set from previous years. I personally feel this is largely due to the current US recession. A normal CES has you bumping shoulders with about two-hundred and forty thousand people. This year there will be an estimated one-hundred and twenty thousand attendees. So with half as many people, you have fewer exhibitors. Not to mention that with continuing losses for many companies research and development isn't a top priority.
So basically I was greeted with partially empty show floors, and still found a way to get lost and miss my appointment with Activision. Luckily I was still able to tour the Microsoft and Sony booths.
Microsoft was showing off some of their premier Xbox 360 titles. Games such as Halo Wars and Banjo Kazooie. While Sony was showing off Killzone 2 along with a couple of lesser titles. Now Sony did have a special treat in the form of Alex Trebek. Yes, they were shooting an episode of Jeopardy, which was pretty cool. It was also a little surreal. You see, as I was standing there checking out the contestants prepping for the show I noticed a quartet right next to me also watching the going ons. This quartet were in bathing suits, and were carrying surf boards. I missed what company they were advertising because I was a little distracted by a couple of the young ladies "assets".
Now tomorrow I will be spending all day with Capcom. From a one-on-one at their suite to an invitation only party where we will be playing Resident Evil 5 on the side of the Planet Hollywood towers. So check back in a couple days and I'll tell you all about RE5 and Street Fighter IV and I'll go into more detail about all your favorites from Sony, Microsoft, Activision, THQ, SOE, and whoever else I can ferret out.
