Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 review (PS3, Xbox 360) By Sayed Islam Published: 12/31/09 PrintEmail
How much hype has been surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? The answer to that question is the fact that there has been too much hype to keep track of. Whether it is the advertisements on television or the billboards adjacent to buildings, the hype was ubiquitous. This begs the question: did Modern Warfare 2 live up to those lofty expectations? To put it succinctly, yes it certainly did. The storyline transpires after the events of the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and the extraordinarily nefarious main antagonist is Vladimir Makarov. Makarov has his eyes set on performing more acts of violence. You play as multiple characters, but there is never a real sense of likeability to any of the characters due to the lack of persona development. On the whole, the plot is told through rudimentary pictures and diagrams.
The gameplay is more or less the same as Modern Warfare. As in the predecessor, there are two modes in Modern Warfare 2: the single player and the multiplayer. In terms of the single player, the main flaw is its length. Veterans of the Call of Duty franchise will be able to easily complete it in merely one day. Nevertheless, there are some adjustments that have been made. Mainly, just about everything seems to be amplified this time around. From the adversaries (both in quantity and quality) to the weapons, you will sense a stronger feeling of immersion. The SpecOps mode is immensely engrossing, and it is simply captivating to work together with another ally. When you look up at the sky to see your comrade and know that he can provide you with cover fire from a chopper, that feeling is unparalleled. The multiplayer is analogous to the first title. It is very likely Infinity Ward has exerted most of their time on this mode, and it shows in the quality. The maps are larger, the explosions are bigger, and the enjoyment is overwhelming. Since the perk schematic was such a fan favorite, it has made its triumphant return. Likewise, the kill streaks are back as well. The bonuses for killstreaks range from air raids to multiple remarkable attacks.
In regards to the visuals, you guessed it. It is an arduous task to find many drawbacks about the graphics. From the enthralling snow mobile mission to the pavements of various other countries, they are astonishing.
About the audio, herein is yet another brilliant aspect about Modern Warfare 2. Albeit the weapons are eerily reminiscent to the first game, there is no need to mollify something that was already fine. Furthermore, more voice acting during combat is a very welcome addition.
Overall, if you thoroughly enjoyed Modern Warfare, then players will without a doubt have fun with the sequel. Kudos to Infinity Ward for another job well done.
