Twisted Metal Black Review (PS2) By Richard S. Stites Published: 02/28/08 PrintEmail
If you have played any of the many Twisted Metal games that were released on the original Playstation then you know what to expect from Twisted Metal Black; vehicular combat at its best. Twisted Metal Black is a good, well presented vehicular combat game.
You chose your favorite vehicle and driver. You have plenty of choices from a motorcycle to an ice-cream truck. Many of the better vehicles require unlocking, but that only ads to the re-play. Each character has their strengths and weaknesses. Some are fast but weak, while others are strong and slow. But what makes each character stand out are their special attacks. Some of the character's special attacks are highly effective. Unfortunately this makes many of the characters unbalanced.
The graphics are smooth, and there is little to no slowdown, which is always a good thing. On the other hand, there are times that you will see an undamaged enemy vehicle heading your way, then when it gets closer and it goes from being undamaged to showing massive damage. It is good that they show vehicle damage, but it should have been implemented better.
Now the presentation, from the music to the design of the main menu really gives the game a more polished feeling. There really was no attempt to re-make the wheel here; they just brought the Twisted Metal franchise to the PS2. And as far as I'm concerned, that is entirely fine. You know what to expect.
Where Twisted Metal Black shines is in the versus mode. There's something entirely satisfying about shooting a flurry of missiles into your buddy and watching his car slowly turn into a flaming hunk of steel.
Twisted Metal Black is a great game, and the best choice for vehicular combat on the PS2. As long as you have a couple of friends, you should be able to get a decent amount of play out of this game.
