Devil May Cry 4 Review (PS3)

The demon annihilator is back once again in Devil May Cry 4. This franchise finally makes its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The original Devil May Cry for the PlayStation 2 made the half devil and half human Dante a household name.

Devil May Cry 2 was one of the most abysmal sequels to ever come to fruition. Capcom did manage to redeem themselves with an admirable and extraordinarily arduous Devil May Cry 3. Now, a new creature bruiser enters by the name of Nero. Dante does make an appearance, but he plays a much more insignificant role than Nero.

The torch has been officially passed from Dante to Nero. Is Nero a hero or merely another zero? This review will answer that question soon enough. The storyline line transpires with the aforementioned protagonist Nero and the perverse organization known as the Order of the Sword. It opens with a devout ceremony and culminates with bloodshed. As a result, Nero’s girlfriend is taken hostage. Without giving anything away, Nero commences his quest to rescue his girlfriend Kyrie. A battle between Dante and Nero ensues, and this is where the game starts. The plot is shown via amazingly rendered cut scenes that will make avid fans of the series giddy. Furthermore, this narrative is full of twists and turns all the way throughout.

The gameplay is exactly what gamers have come to expect from Capcom. Instead of having Dante as the main playable character, Nero is the central individual. Nero plays eerily similar to Dante. For example, he has almost exactly the same weaponry. There is a gigantic sword and handy guns in his arsenal. All of the usual bells and whistles are present such as jumping and suspending an adversary in the air.

One aspect of the gameplay that separates Nero from Dante is the Devil Bringer. This devilish feature allows players to perform overpowering maneuvers. These moves entail grabbing enemies and smashing them to the ground. Nero can also utilize the Devil Bringer to pull foes from afar towards him (ala Scorpion from Mortal Kombat) and toss opponents away. The best element about this is that you can link up an endless chain of combinations to eradicate all monsters in a matter of seconds. Occasionally, Nero can even vary his attacks even further by closing the distance between monsters. The boss encounters are where the game really shines. This is especially conspicuous when the boss fight against a fire monster that looks somewhat like Ifrit from the Final Fantasy games. A majority of the boss fights end in the same way. After the bosses take a moderate amount of damage, players can unleash the true dominance of the Devil Bringer.
