Turok Review (PS3)

If you are a first person shooter fan, then last year must have been video game euphoria. It can be an arduous task to exceed the quality of a game like Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, The Orange Box, or BioShock. The original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was one of the most unique titles on the original Nintendo 64. Seeds of Evil was also above average; however, Turok: Evolution was clearly one of the biggest disappointments in the series.

This next generation adaptation hopes to keep that excellence from the Nintendo 64 edition alive with the release of Turok. The storyline revolves around the protagonist Joseph Turok and his allies who are members of the Whiskey Company. Both Joseph and his comrades are on a mission to hunt down the nefarious Kane. Regrettably, their vehicle crashes as they travel towards Kane. As a result, they are stranded in a jungle that is imbued with dinosaurs and other adversaries. The plot is told via flashbacks which is eerily similar to the original God of War. With that being said, it is still an appealing narrative all the way through.

The gameplay manages to reclaim some of that mystique that made Turok: Evolution engrossing. Joseph Turok is a Native American which is reminiscent of the previous Turok titles, and he capable of gruesome brutality. This is especially conspicuous when gamers are using the knife. The knife is the weapon of choice for melee combat, and it works to perfection. As a matter of fact, some would argue that this tool functions too well. As you progress, the knife will end up becoming a more and more focal point of attack. Silent take downs are executed with it equipped.

In addition to the knife, there is the trademark weapon that was seen in the Turok comic books which is the handy bow. The bow is the ultimate way to eradicate an adversary from afar. Since just about everything dies with one arrow, it is in your best interest to use it. This same bow can even have enhanced arrows with the ability to detonate at any given instant. The targeting reticule even deviates from white to red when an enemy is near with the bow. Dual wielding that is exactly like Halo 3.

Other weapons entail the machine gun, sniper rifle, flamethrower, grenades, and a rocket propelled grenade launcher. Additionally, there is a mini gun that can automatically shoot when placed on the ground. Furthermore, these weapons have alternate methods of fire (ala Unreal Tournament III). Most of the gear is available in other first person shooters, so it isn’t original nevertheless efficient.
